What do you see on the card?

A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a black banner with a white rose. Before it lies a fallen king; a bishop stands with clasped hands, and a young woman and a child kneel. In the background there is a river, a boat, and the sun rising between two towers.

  • The white horse — purity and the power of transformation.
  • The black banner with the white rose — passing away and rebirth as one.
  • The fallen king — change reaches everyone, whatever their rank.
  • The river and the boat — the crossing from one stage of life to the next.
  • The rising sun — after every ending comes a new day.

The story of the card

After a long road, the Wanderer arrived at the ancient bridge.

On the far side the light of another world glimmered, but Death stood before the bridge, having come by another road, as if crossing his own path.

The Wanderer knew he could not take with him everything he had carried so far. He took the bag from his shoulder and laid it before Death.

In the bag was everything that had traveled with him: joys and sorrows, love and disappointments, memories, fears, experiences.

Death took nothing away — it only kept safe what no longer served him.

When the bag was left on the ground, the gate of the bridge swung open. A new light waited on the other side, and the Wanderer set off with a lighter heart.

What you had to carry until now, you must leave here so you can move on.

UprightDeath Meaning

Ending, transformation, new beginning. When Death appears upright, a chapter closes — a relationship, a job, a habit or a stage of life — to make room for something new.

Waite's divinatory list gives "end, mortality, destruction", yet in describing the image he speaks of "change, transformation and passage from lower to higher". Modern readings almost always take it symbolically: a transformation that may hurt, but frees you. What you let go of makes room.

ReversedDeath Reversed

Reversed, Death points to being stuck: an ending that is overdue, but that you have not yet allowed. Waite lists inertia, lethargy and "hope destroyed".

It can show fear of change, or clinging tightly to the past. The question: what no longer serves you, yet you still carry it?

Death in Love, Work and Life

Love

The end of a relationship or a deep transformation of it — what renews itself grows deeper. Reversed: a drawn-out ending, clinging to the old.

Work & money

A career change, the end of a job, a restructuring — a new opportunity where the old one stood. Reversed: stuck in a situation that no longer works.

Spiritual path

After the letting go of the Hanged Man, Death brings real transformation: what you had to carry until now, you must leave here so you can move on.
